During more than 10 years propellers have been investigated by model tests in the SSPA large cavitation tunnel in which complete ship models can be mounted. This equipment made it possible to measure the pressure pulses on the hull induced by the cavitating propellers at correct geometric scaling. During these years great experience has been achieved also by full scale measurements and correlation studies.

Different procedures to reduce the pressure pulses and thus the corresponding vibration has been investigated. These measures include improvement of hull shape, applications of different kinds of aft body fins, vortex generators and nozzles and improvement of the propeller design by blade tip unloading and/or skew and also reduction of propeller diameter to increase blade tip clearance. The consequences of these modifications have in most cases also been investigated with regard to cavitation erosion and efficiency.
