Using elaborate propeller lifting line and lifting surface computer programs, it is demonstrated that existing criteria for optimum hydrodynamic pitch distribution are not adequate, especially for wake adapted propellers. The shortcomings in the derivation of these criteria are pointed out. Numerical calculations show that loading the tip region can increase propeller efficiency beyond the predictions using traditional criteria.
