Major sources of noise radiated by a ship to the oceans are briefly reviewed, focusing on the underwater noise radiated by the propeller caused by cavitating and non cavitating phenomena. Sheet cavitation and especially tip vortex cavitation are the most frequently first types of cavitation that appears in modern low noise propellers. Some general comments are made on the influence of geometric propeller parameters in the cavitation inception diagram, to achieve propeller designs that delay all types of cavitation. Finally, some comments are done in the singing phenomenon and the influence of ice in propeller design.
