The increased severity of bilge discharge regulations imposed 011 coastal shipping has required a new type of stern tube sealing device which has a longer life and excellent sealing performance. A face-type seal with a uniquely shaped sealing ring made of rubber was developed and has been applied to various vessels instead of the conventional gland packing system. It has been very successful in service in blue water. However, heavy wear and leakage problems 011 sliding surfaces were observed 011 some boats operated in brown water. Many types of tests were carried out in order to develop a special stern tube seal for brown water. Excellent results, as shown in this paper, were obtained.
