There is an urgent need for new, longer-lived cost-effective water-lubricated marine rudder and main propulsion shaft bearings. This paper describes a new bearing design, called Super Demountable, which promises to fulfill the need to exceed 15 years life by reducing bearing and shaft wear. The new bearing makes use of a new polymer alloy (NPA) that exhibits low wear itself and also near. zero shaft wear in abrasive-laden water. Wear of NPA and the friction torque are both reduced when the radial load is increased, resulting in L/D ratios of 2 or less. Rubber staves lock the NPA load-carrying staves in place in the new bearings, resulting in simplified (lower cost) housings.
