This paper describes the results of a ConocoPhillips sponsored study examining the feasibility of a Conical Piled Monopod (CPM), Figure 1, in about 30m water depth in a multi year ice environment. The CPM concept considered is a standalone pile supported drilling and production structure. It was concluded that the CPM concept is feasible in a multi-year ice environment and offers cost and time saving advantages by eliminating need for solid ballast and seafloor preparation where soft soils are present at the seafloor. In addition, the CPM has large enclosed volume, which could accommodate a potentially significant amount of oil storage. ConocoPhillips has patent pending on the CPM concept.
