A full-scale test propulsion measurement program was performed on the Fednav owned UMIAK I, a 31500 DWT bulk carrier classed by Det Norske Veritas. The propulsion machinery is distinguishable; consisting of the combination of a large-bore electronically controlled two-stroke diesel engine directly driving the large controllable pitch propeller mounted in a nozzle. The objectives of the research were to better understand the quantification of the loads caused by interaction between propeller blades and ice, and the corresponding dynamic responses through the shaft line and into the main engine, and to assess compliance with the IACS Polar Class design code.
