This paper reviews the marine technology and related issues associated with shipping natural gas, on a year-round basis, from the Canadian High Arctic. Based on the authors’ involvement in the Arctic Pilot Project (1977-1984), the only previous well developed proposal to ship Arctic gas, the paper looks at vessel routing, the physical environment, ship technology and the transportation of LNG, together with the current maritime regulatory regime governing such shipping activities. An outline design is presented for appropriate Polar Class LNG vessels.
