This is a non-technical paper based on the author’s experience in designing and using economical low powered planing boats. The discussion includes three designs in the 18 – 25’ range that are designed to plane easily using 50 hp or less. Topics include the effect of weight and hull shape on planing efficiency, handling, comfort and dryness, and aesthetics in boat design.
