Laboratory tests were conducted to simulate the wave loading on a Gulf of Mexico production caisson under extreme hurricane conditions with intermediate depth breaking waves superimposed upon simulated hurricane-generated currents. This work was motivated by the continuing uncertainties in the way that both wave current loading and breaking-wave loading are predicted. The 20th edition of the American Petroleum Institute Recommended Practice 2A (API RP2A) provides, for the first time, a recommended procedure for computing wave-current loading. The API does not recommend a method of accounting for wave breaking, and it has not been known how well the API procedure works for typical shallow water hurricane conditions when breaking waves are superimposed on currents.
