Tests of geometrically symmetrical SWATH pontoons mounted asymmetrically with respect to the struts showed strong lift coefficients resembling those of a cambered foil or flat plate at an angle of attack. Two such demi-hulls were tested as a complete SWATH and showed more drag than the increase due solely to strut interaction. This foil-like interaction may explain the large increase in drag seen in recent asymmetrical pontoon ("golf-club") model tests.
