The procedures used to collect laboratory data for the determination of the statistical properties of wave groups in irregular long crested deep-water waves are described. This discussion summarizes the practical aspects of generating non-repetitive long runs of data, the analysis of group statistics based on an envelope of the wave crests and operational tests to estimate the effects of tank reflections on a stationary wave measurement. Data analysis is shown for a sample Bretschneider spectrum. This work is part of a large comprehensive study of wave group theories and their verification using laboratory data.
