Design optimization of external fluid flow is a topic of active research. The paper presents a shape optimization scheme using the commercial computational fluid dynamics solver, AcuSolve. The optimal ship hull shape to minimize the flow drag is computed using an innovative algorithm based on control theory. A gradient method is used to minimize the drag on a ship hull constrained by the Navier Stokes solution.
