Experimental observations support the physical understanding of breaking ship waves, a challenging multiphase flow regime. The Quantitative Visualization (QViz) measuring technique allows non-uniform flows which are typically difficult to characterize.

Advanced image processing algorithms have been developed to allow the standard QViz approach to obtain detailed, time-varying free surface elevations of the waves generated behind a transom-stern. The resulting surface roughness and free-wave spectral content provide a method of breaking-wave region assessment, as well as guidance and verification for numerical models.
