When downhole conditions prevent acquisition of open hole logs, Pulsed Neutron (PN.) logs run through drill pipe present an alternative to no log at all. Commonly, the same conditions which lead to the running of logs through drill pipe also work against their success as diagnostic tools. Probable success or failure of the Pulsed Neutron to resolve oil from water is predictable and need not be left to experiment. The factors are examined one-by-one and test calculations performed using typical Gulf Coast numbers. A list of suggestions for improved results accompany two log examples where P.N. logs through example is diagnostic, the other is not.
