Abstract

Lately, environmental aspect is imposed to research in various sciences. As a result, the term “Environmental Geotechnics” has emerged for the problems dealing with protection of the environment. Furthermore, globally there is an intensive tendency for use of materials instedad of their deposition in landfills. One such product is the fly ash, being waste or secondary industrial product of the coal burning process. It is known so far, that fly ash can be used in various industries. Moreover, its use for soil improvement has been extensively studied. In North Macedonia fly ash has been used only in the cement industry. However, there are large quantities that can be allocated for other purposes instead of being deposited in a landfill. This paper presents the challenges and advantages of using fly ash and it also has the purpose to increase the knowledge especially for the industrial subjects for the benefits of its wide application. Moreover, the scientific potential for research of the dynamic properties of natural soils improved with fly ash, from seismically vulnerable regions in our country is presented.
