Abstract

Debris flows represent one of the most specific modern geological phenomena within the terrain. Globally, throughout the history of mankind, a large number of cases involving the loss of human lives and large economic losses are related precisely to debris flows, and especially in Europe, where they are considered one of the most pronounced hazards. In the national context, it is a generally known fact that due to the complex geological-tectonic, geomorphological and climatic circumstances, parts of the territory of Macedonia fall into the category of terrains with natural predispositions for the development of instabilities. The Polog planning region is particularly characteristic for the frequent movements of the rock masses.

Within the framework of the paper, an approach is presented for assessing and mapping of the susceptibility to the development of debris flows within this region, where a regional analysis model called Flow-R is applied in combination with GIS technology. With the regional mapping of debris flow susceptibility, zoning of the potentially threatened areas has been carried out, and the areas where more specific analyzes are needed using more advanced methods have also been determined. It is appreciated that with certain modifications, the approach can be used to prepare regional susceptibility maps for debris flows development for other terrains with similar geological-geomorphological and meteorological characteristics.
