Abstract

Weathered rock masses have soil-like behaviour but bear the typical rock mass characteristics. Determining the shear characteristics of weathered rock masses implies determining the parameters of the shear strength envelope, not the angle of internal friction and cohesion used in soil mechanics. This paper presents the results of two approaches to determining the φ and c parameters: in situ shear tests and the Hoek and Brown method.
