Abstract

Geophysical surveys using the combined methods approach were performed at a characteristic location in Strumica, R. North Macedonia. The main objective of the surveys was definition of the seismo-geological and tectonic characteristics of the terrain, potential anomalies, local tectonic deformations and discontinuities which indicate weak, crushed and cracked zones in the terrain structure. For this purpose, surface seismic refraction and reflection methods in combination with GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) method were applied. Surface seismic methods which have been applied in IZIIS research for a longer period, represent non-invasive, cost and time effective, widely accepted geophysical methods for shallow subsurface characterization. On the other hand, the ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has been recently applied in IZIIS as an addition to the seismic methods and enables fast and effective scanning of the geological structure and improvement of the investigations quality. The results of the performed surveys at the location of Orta Mosque in Strumica, R. North Macedonia are presented as 2D seismic models and radargrams that map the subsurface terrain structure with high resolution and prove the efficiency of each of the applied geophysical methods.
