Abstract

Geophysics has been widely applied to civil engineering, it has gained recognition through the years and it is now commonly applied during different stages of engineering works. Yet, there are divided opinions from civil engineers regarding the use of geophysics in their projects. In this paper, the author gives a general panorama about applied geophysics to civil engineering and focuses on the workflow during the field work for a good-practices geophysical campaign. The process is illustrated by a case study related to ground exploration using seismic methods, in which electromagnetic background noise affected passive seismic records by a microtremor array measurements technique, and how a change of approach was necessary for the characterization of the site and the detection of a zone of interest for direct testing.
