Abstract

The city of Veles is known as an area with frequent occurrences of hazards such as rock falls and landslides, which affect the population and critical infrastructure. The last massive rockfall happened in March 2018, reflecting on stopping the road and railway traffic for several weeks. Thus, a process of geotechnical investigations and design phase were applied. Based on the findings from the engineering-geological mapping, remote sensing and geotechnical investigations, stability analyses and rock fall simulations were carried out. These analyses, the designed and applied protection measures are briefly explained in the paper. Having in mind the specifics of this case, practical aspects of decision making, investigation, design and final phase of installation of the protection measures are presented. Some recommendations for management with such kind of hazards are highlighted.
