ABSTRACT:

This paper presents the results of stability analysis performed on the rock slopes at Ssangyong lime- stone quarry in Korea. The analysis was performed using the methods of stereographic projection and block theory, and the results were compared with those of computer aided kinematic analysis. From the analysis, it was found that rock slopes in the area had potentially unstable blocks. The maximum safe angle of the slope was calculated to be 49°. The optimum orientation of the cut was suggested so as to improve the stability.

INTRODUCTION

Ssangyong limestone quarry is the largest open pit mine in Korea. Mining operation is being processed at three sites, yielding 13 million tons of annual production. One of the sites, called region 2, appeared to have potential problems of slope stability. Height of an individual bench in this region ranged from 15 m to 20 m. Stability analysis of rock slopes was performed using the methods of stereographic projection and block theory. This paper presents the results of stability analysis performed on the rock slopes of the site.

In this analysis, orientations of the discontinuities existing in rock slopes of interest were investigated. Direct shear test of rock specimen having natural joints was conducted to obtain the friction angle of the joints. All rock blocks were classified, which formed through the intersection of the joints and slope surface. Of these blocks, key blocks were identified and the maximum safe angle of rock slope was determined from the number of key blocks for various slope angles. Finally, computer aided kinematic analysis was performed to compare the results.

Geology

Ssangyong limestone quarry is located at Dong-Hae city, middle eastern coast of Korean peninsula. General geology of the area is composed of four major strata: Myobong slate, Pungchon limestone strata of Ordovician period, Hong jeom strata of Permian period underlying Ordovician period strata with unconformity, and intrusive igneous rocks.
