A 60 m span cavern injointed rock with rock cover varying from 25 to 50 m poses challenging design problems. The Gjøvik rock cavern will be one of the ice hockey arenas in the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Norway. NGI"s investigations have included geological and Q-system mapping in nearby rock excavations, and characterization of jointing in four drill cores for Q, JRC, JCS and ф determination. In situ measurements have included minifrac and joint jacking for determining horizontal stress levels, crossho1e seismic tomography between three of the investigation boreholes, and large scale measurement of joint roughness. All this information has been used in three sets of numerical models, using the discontinuum code UDEC-BB. Stability is judged to be satisfactory with the proposed system of rock bolting and fiber reinforced shotcrete.


Une caverne à portee de 60 m dans une roche fissuree avec couvert rocheux de 25 à 50 m pose un defi au dimensionnement. La caverne de Gjøvik sera l"un des arena de hockey sur glace aux Jeux olympiques d"hiver en Norvège en 1994. Les reconnaissances faites par NGI ont compris 1a cartographie geologique et en système Q, et un re1eve des caract!ristiques des joints dans 4 sondages avec determinations Q, JRC, JCS, et ф. Les mesures in situ ont compris minifrac et soulèvement de joint entre trois des sondages, et mesures à grande echelle de la rugosite des joints. Cette information a ete utilisee avec trois modèles numeriques dans le code d"elements discontinus UDEC-BB. La stabilite de la caverne a ete jugee satisfaisante avec un système de boulons rocheux et projection d"un beton arme au fibre.


Eine unterirdische Halle mit 60 m Spannweite in geklueftetem Fe1s, mit 25 bis 50 m Überdeckung stellt eine besonderedesigntechnische Herausforderung dar. Die Gjøvik Felshalle wird eine der Eishockeyarenen der olympischen Winterspiele in Norwegen sein. NGI"s Untersuchungen bestanden aus geologischen und Q-System Kartierungen in nahegelegenen unterirdischen Anlagen und Kluftbeschreibungen in vier Bohrkernen zur Bestimmung von Q, JRC, JCS und фr. Feltuntersuchungen beinhalteten "minifrac" -und Kluftaufweitungsversuche zur Bestimmung der horizontalen Spannungen, seismische "crosshole" -Tomographie zwischen drei Erkundungsbohrungen und grossmassstabliche Kluftrauhigkeitsmessungen. Mit Hilfe des diskontinuum Programms UDEC-BB und unter Verwendung aller gesammelten Daten wurden dann drei numerische Simulierungen durchgefuehrt. Mit dem vorgeschlagenen System, bestehend aus Felsankern und fiberverstarktem Spritzbeton wird die Stabilitat der Fe1sha1le als gut bezeichnet.


NGI and Noteby of Oslo, and Sintef/NTH of Trondheim have cooperated in a series of geological and rock mechanics investigations with rock cavern designers Fortifikasjon A/S of Oslo as client. The planned ice hockey cavern (Figure 1) will be sited at Gjøvik, on the west side of lake Mjøsa, some 25 km south of Lillehammer which is the centre of the 1994 Winter Olympic games.

The Community of Gjøvik have previously engaged Fortifikasjon A/S and Noteby for their fine underground swimming pool, which is a popular local sports facility. Adjacent caverns for the Telephone Exchange and Civil Defence will now be joined by the world"s largest public sports facility in rock; an Olympic Ice Hockey rink for 5000 spectators, to be located in a 60 m span, 90 m long and 25 m high rock cavern.

Jan Rygh, former Director of Fortifikasjon A/S deserves honour for his foresight in visualizing the potential for rock cavern developments in this modest Norwegian hillside consisting of red and grey Precambrian gneiss. This article describes the geological investigations and rock mechanics analyses performed by NGI in Phases I and II of the feasibility studies.
