ABSTRACT

The Canary Islands constitute an ideal laboratory to study volcanic rocks from a geochemical and geotechnical point of view, since nearly all volcanic processes are found in the Canaries. We present the outline and first results of a scientific project devoted to study the radiological properties of volcanic rocks, in terms of radiogenic elements and exhalation of radon. More than 200 different samples are being characterised in terms of physical, chemical and geotechnical properties. In this sense, we will be able to compare radiological properties with other chemical and physical properties of the rocks. Moreover, we are also implementing monitoring methodologies to study the spatial and temporal variations on radon concentration relative to changes in physical properties of rocks such as porosity, pore
