The RTRI has developed a system that allows automatic execution for most of the work involved in diagnosing tunnel soundness, presuming the causes of deformation (such as cracks and flaking) and deciding on related countermeasures. To do this, it uses information on cracks, tunnel section deformation rates and data on landforms, geological conditions, etc. obtained from inspections. The system is based on the accumulated experience of the authors from general and individual inspections for earth structures, which are part of the general flow of railway tunnel inspections. It eliminates issues stemming from differences between individual abilities, such as variations in inspection results (a common problem in tunnel inspections), and allows leveling and objectifying of inspection accuracy.
