A blind-T pipe section is commonly used as a flow conditioner upstream of a vertically installed multiphase flowmeter. An investigation using high-speed video camera, image processing, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling studied flow recirculation, flow development, and flow regimes of water and water-air flows in a transparent horizontal blind-T and its vertical outlet pipe. A blind-T generates two recirculation zones that disturb the velocity and pressure profiles in the vicinity of its outlet. There is little disintegration of gas-liquid flow intermittency in the transition from horizontal to vertical flow. A mapping of the horizontal to vertical flow regime transition is attempted.
