Session 8: Innovation Technology - Challenging Performance Limits

As the industry standardizes on the use of proven and often preferred solutions, innovative ways of addressing barriers to up-time are on the rise. Technology has enabled new players and/or new drilling and completion methods to immerge, positioning early adopters to test and further develop them first. In this session we will witness some of these upcoming innovations that could shape the industries future.

Session 9: Geomechanics

In the process of Well Construction Geomechanics is often treated as the elephant in the room. We have procedures (that are conservative) to mitigate the risk of catastrophe and we often hope these will be enough. In this session we consider how through better understanding of the characteristics of the drilling system and its interaction with the formation we can better mitigate these risks and improve the efficiency of our operations. We will consider the effects of circulating temperature on fracture and loss characteristics of the formation as well as how our actions will change this parameter. We will discuss the physics and chemistry of the system stability through the drilling fluid salinity and control of the mud density. As will most elephants, we ignore them at our peril.

Session 10: Directional Drilling and Wellbore Placement

Wellbore placement involves the engineering, technology and know-how required to geometrically position the different types of wells in the reservoir while avoiding existing wells and geohazards. As a fundamental component of the directional drilling discipline, wellbore placement technologies and techniques have vastly advanced over the last decade and continue to evolve at a very rapid speed. This exciting session will cover new developments related to collision avoidance and its impact on risk, new technology disrupting the current practices of wellbore placement as well as new computational techniques.

Session 12: Drilling Dynamics I

Drilling Dynamics continues to be an important consideration in drilling performance, drill string design, operational practices and the development and implementation of new downhole tools and rig automation systems. The first presentation in this session will discuss an operator’s applications of real-time monitoring, post-drill forensics, high-frequency downhole sensor packages and adjusted drilling practices that led to improved drilling performance in highly interbedded formations. The second presentation will focus on how bottom-hole assembly lateral vibration chatter can impede application of weight to bit due to improper stabilizer placement. A frequency-domain model is used to explain how dynamic side forces can contribute to weight transfer dysfunction. The final presentation will discuss a time-domain drilling dynamics model that uses finite element methodologies combined with mathematical techniques to reduce computational time. Model results will be compared with downhole data measurements for a case study of an unconventional well.

Session 13: Drilling Automation II

Pride of place in this session goes to the winners of this year’s Drillbotics® competition with their ingenious solution to the problem of autonomous directional drilling. Autonomous drilling is at the leading edge of present research efforts, not only focusing on the logic of drilling efficiently and avoiding well collisions, but also how to deal with the unexpected events that always occur. Critical to safe drilling is the accurate translation of the drilling plan into discrete work steps at the rig site both for automated as well as manual execution. The latest research into the methods for implementing this significant aspect, and checking that what is planned is done, is presented.
