At Shell, our aim is to help meet the world’s growing energy needs in a responsible way. We are taking action today to prepare for tomorrow’s energy and environmental challenges. We use human ingenuity, innovation and technology to unlock the energy our customers need.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is the ultimate pipeline – greatly increasing flexibility, optionality and mitigating security of supply. LNG bridges the distance between supply and demand, allowing markets to enjoy the benefits of growing gas supply (and unlocking stranded gas reserves).
Floating LNG technology allows for the production, liquefaction, storage and transfer of LNG at sea, as well as the ability to process and export liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and condensate, opening up new business opportunities for countries looking to develop their gas resources and bring more natural gas to market.
While Floating LNG is new to the industry, its innovation really lies mainly in the way it integrates practices, processes and equipment that are well known and proven in the oil and gas industry. FLNG combines the best of subsea and marine technologies and operations, with optimised LNG facility design.
On May 20th 2011 Shell announced its final investment decision (FID) for the Prelude Floating LNG project. This announcement marked the start of Shell’s and the world’s first FLNG project and since then the project has been surging ahead. Through the Prelude FLNG project, FLNG is coming to life. Construction is well underway around the globe and Shell is building the operations and maintenance organisation in Australia required to operate our first FLNG project.
