Due to the nature of unconventional resources, focus on well control and well integrity during drilling operations has tended to shift away. This shift of focus is attributed partly to the very low permeability of the formation during drilling and a perceived lowering of risk, and partly due to the relatively short life span of these wells. Data from Texas oil and gas activities show that 52% of well control incidents that occur in unconventional wells are attributed to the completion operations and 29% occur while drilling. Well design and hydraulic fracturing create unique challenges to well control and well integrity problems. This paper discusses well control and well integrity in unconventional resources from engineering, operational, and economic viewpoints.
