Wind-generated waves are formed by shear and pressure effects as air passes over a free water surface, and grow exponentially, depending on wind speed, direction, duration, and fetch. This study aims to characterize and provide an understanding of the spatial and temporal evolution of developing wind-generated waves. Nondimensionalized first-order power models relating frequency and fetch were developed through laboratory studies in the University of Michigan’s Wind-Wave Tank. Dimensional first-order power correlations between frequency, significant wave height, fetch, and wind speed constructed here provide empirical evidence for future development of a mathematical model involving these parameters.
