A robust 3D acoustic full waveform inversion strategy for Malaysian basins

A 3D Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) strategy for offshore Malaysian basins is developed, which aims to obtain accurate velocity models by minimizing the difference between observed and modelled seismic data. The acoustic wavefield simulation during FWI is based on a pseudo-analytical method. We propose a new solution to automatically detect the cycle-skipping by analyzing the notch frequency of the difference between the observed and simulated shot gathers, and then remove the cycle skipped energy by modifying the adjoint source with a low pass filter. We tested the approach on 2.5D Marmousi dataset and then applied to offshore seismic datasets from Malaysia. Our FWI results have revealed detailed velocity features such as faults and thin layers. By applying the updated velocity into RTM, the quality of the resulting images have improved significantly.
