Fire and gas detection equipment placement has shown to be increasing in complexity over time. Over the years rules of thumb or heuristics have been developed to assist in the proper placement and optimization of the fire and gas system. Due to the judgement involved in these heuristics, the same set of "rules" can result in radically different designs depending on an individual's experience and expertise. Additionally, these heuristics can cause overall poor placement due to the fallacy that the underlying assumption is always valid.
