The objectives of production logging in horizontal production wells are typically the same as for vertical or deviated wells—that is, to measure the inflow profile of the phases produced. However, because the gravitational forces are approximately perpendicular to the flow direction in a nominally horizontal well, the phases are likely to be segregated, meaning that the velocity and holdup profiles at any given location are probably very nonuniform and nonsymmetrical. These complex flow conditions have led to the development of a new class of production logging tools that in general deploy arrays of measurement devices to map the nonuniform flow conditions.
