This chapter introduces the concept of material-balance modeling, emphasizing the fundamental energy mechanisms and the use of pressure and production data to understand the performance of oil reservoirs when considered a zero-dimensional tank. The discussion shows how to apply this physics-based model to estimate original oil-in-place (OOIP) and identify drive mechanisms.
Ultimate recovery for black-oil reservoirs is predicated on two primary concerns:
The effectiveness of the properties and depletion mechanisms present in the reservoir forms the physical basis for determining reserves. Recovery is highest in low-viscosity, relatively homogeneous moderate- to high-permeability reservoirs. The maximum recovery that can be expected for a good-quality black-oil reservoir with an efficient waterdrive is approximately 50–60% of the OOIP.
