Designing and monitoring oil displacement by means of water encroachment requires a priori knowledge of the basic physical properties of the waterflood system. In this chapter, fundamental rock and rock/fluid interaction properties are reviewed. The aim is to understand the distribution and movement of immiscible fluids in porous media.
A reservoir rock must display two basic properties to possess commercial potential. These properties are
The porosity of a reservoir rock defines the storage capacity while absolute permeability describes the ability of the rock to transmit fluids. These properties will not necessarily remain constant over the producing life of the reservoir because of potential compressibility effects.
