The depletion of an oil reservoir should be designed around four considerations:

Oil recovery is highest when the oil is displaced by water or gas invasion. Gas reservoirs, as a result of their high compressibilities, realize the highest recovery factors when pressure depletions exist. Gas expansion is the primary driving force in this case.

Oil and gas reservoirs should be depleted as soon as is practical, to maximize investment and take advantage of the time value of money.

Water is often injected into an oil reservoir to physically displace an otherwise immovable oil toward a producing well to prevent further pressure loss. Water injection increases oil recovery by means of gravity segregation, physical displacement, or a combination of the two.
