The type of wells used, the specification of their locations, and the type of completion to be installed represent some of the few degrees of freedom available to influence the success of a waterflood development. It is important, therefore, that close attention be paid to this aspect of the design because it will materially affect the success, or otherwise, of the project.

The early waterfloods were always designed on the basis of vertical injection wells. Although horizontal wells were first used as producers, this well type was soon also used for injectors. Taber and Seright (1992) describe an early application where the use of horizontal wells was said to improve areal sweep efficiency by approximately 25–40%.
