This chapter deals with collection of data about lost circulation events and interpreting them to help choose which actions to take. In general, the more data that can be obtained about a problem, the easier and more appropriate the solution. In drilling and cementing operations, however, the timing of the data or information enters the balance.

If a well is being drilled in the first stages of a large project, then extensive wireline logging after drilling and modeling with the acquired data are valuable. A picture of the behavior of the field on a large scale can be vital in understanding which formations and drilling practices are likely to lead to problems on future wells, such as lost circulation, assisting the planning, and reducing costs of individual wells and the entire project.
