This monograph is dedicated to Professor R. Byron “Bob” Bird, my major professor in the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Wisconsin Madison. During my three years there working toward my PhD degree and for the 50+ years since, Bob has shown what academic excellence is all about both in researching and publishing significant original technical work and also in the multiyear efforts required to prepare and perfect thorough and well-organized textbooks and related technical books. He has shown me both the enjoyment that comes from publishing technical materials, but also the effort demanded to make such publications as accurate and complete as possible.
This monograph is also dedicated to my wife, Deanna, and our family who allowed me the time and space to devote to this project during the past four years to gather, organize, and draft this monograph. They would say that it was all “fun” for me, combining my love of history, in this case the historical development of waterflooding technology within the oil industry, and understanding the steady advancements of theory and practice that went with the many successful applications during the evolution of waterflooding.
