Measurements on drillpipe (MOD) play an increasingly important role in modern drilling and formation evaluation practices. They provide an operator with almost immediate feedback on both the trajectory of the hole being drilled and the characteristics of the formations penetrated. This kind of information is unavailable in real time from conventional sources such as deviation surveys or wireline logs that, a priori, must be run after the drilling has taken place. MOD is of particular benefit in that it can be applied while geosteering a wellbore to a target zone, maintaining an extended reach section in the zone and at the same time performing formation evaluation comparable with that available from conventional wireline sensors.
