A rich body of literature exists for good practices and innovative solutions relating to surveillance. While standard practices may be lacking within our industry, pockets of excellence in planning and execution of reservoir surveillance activities are plentiful. Most companies are trying to reach a balance between right-sizing surveillance expenditures and managing operating costs.

Deployment and maintenance of analysis and forecasting tool kits, workflows, collaborative environment, and integration practices are as critical to the success in gaining knowledge and field intelligence as is the data-gathering program itself. The management of change (MOC) associated with ever changing and improving tool kits creates challenges in the organizational capability of companies in terms of the integrity of various workflows that can be broadly deployed across the organization. There is significant effort expended to educate and train engineers, and share surveillance processes as well as successes and learnings. This takes the form of lessons learned and best practices through knowledge management systems.
