Unconventional oil and gas resource plays are a topic of considerable focus and activity today. Resource plays are areally extensive deposits of hydrocarbons, mostly generated in situ. These plays have low correlatability for continuous hydrocarbon presence and possess extremely low matrix porosity and permeability. Vast resources have been identified across the world that, if produced economically, will be a game-changer in the world energy picture. Today, there are hundreds of rigs drilling thousands of wells in various regional plays such as the Marcellus, Haynesville, and Bakken in the US. With the tremendous abundance of such resources around the world, activities in a number of other basins including those in Australia, Argentina, China, Romania, Poland, Ukraine, and Canada are heating up.
