Over the course of a field development, the focus and prioritization of measurements shifts as the asset moves from the exploration and appraisal phase to development and secondary recovery phase. The objectives change from, say, determining lithology and understanding stratigraphy and hydrocarbon assessment to improving reservoir performance, targeting remaining oil, and assessing fluid movement.

There are a number of attributes being assessed at any given phase in the development; however, the basic attributes relate only to depositional, rock, fluid, or production characteristics. Table 5.1 shows some of these attributes that are classified as either baseline, dynamic, or episodic.

If one were to perform a look-back on the fields we develop, we will find that enough is known about the reservoir to design an optimal development only after we have produced it. This paradox leads to the fact that we will continue making critical decisions under uncertainty. The question it poses is whether we can measure the appropriate quantities at the right time and at the appropriate scale.
