This chapter provides background for the surface components in a typical production facility. This is to motivate thought on the value of integrating measurement system requirements during the design of the functional objectives of a production facility. The chapter is not intended to cover design concepts or, for that matter, equipment details. The intent is to lay the groundwork for the necessity and leveraging of monitoring equipment for appropriate surveillance and safe production practices. A few field-level concepts such as production allocation and metering are also discussed to understand the error bar in the data we collect and how it may impact future forecasts.
