While the purpose of well test interpretation is to develop an improved reservoir characterization to assist in making better reservoir management decisions, the purpose of well test design is to ensure that the test data are interpretable and that the objectives of the test are met.

This chapter focuses on well test design from a subsurface point of view (i.e., estimating the flow rate and test duration required to achieve the desired test objectives). Planning a test for an exploration well typically involves personnel from multiple operating and service companies, with many different areas of expertise ( Nardone 2009 ); a full discussion of the issues involved is beyond the scope of this text.
