Type curves are solutions to the diffusivity equation in dimensionless form displayed graphically. Usually, type curves for well test analysis are graphed on a log-log scale of pressure change vs. time. Multiple curves of different shapes, corresponding to a range of values for one or more parameters in the analytical solution, are drawn on the same set of axes. During the type-curve-matching process, a graph of the field data is placed on top of the type-curve graph and is then moved vertically and horizontally to find the curve that has the shape most like that of the field data. The placement of the field-data graph on the type-curve graph and the shape of the type curve providing the best fit are then used to calculate permeability, wellbore-storage (WBS) coefficient, skin factor, fracture half-length, or other reservoir properties.
