The theory of well testing begins with an understanding of fluid flow in porous media.

Section 2.2 gives a brief review of Darcy’s law for steady-state flow in linear and radial systems.

In Section 2.3 , the continuity equation, Darcy’s law, and the equation of state for a slightly compressible liquid are used to develop the diffusivity equation, describing single-phase flow of a slightly compressible liquid.

The Ei -function solution to the diffusivity equation , for radial flow to a line-source well producing at constant rate from an infinite-acting reservoir, is introduced in Section 2.4 , along with the logarithmic approximation to the Ei function.
