The physical concepts, categories, and applications of mechanical devices and processes for enhancing pipeline operations are described in this chapter. Included are pigs (and ancillary equipment), hydrostatic pressure testing [hydro testing] (HT)], in-line inspection (ILI) tools, and coiled tubing. The use of various devices for placing chemical treatments in the pipelines is described in Section 6.7. Details of cleaning applications using only pigs, combinations of chemicals with or without pigs, and high-pressure water are considered in Chapter 7. Whereas the previous chapters have discussed various problems that can occur in pipelines and facilities, the following three chapters (5 through 7) constitute the problem-solving part of this book.
