Solution gas drive has been implemented successfully for some heavy-oil reservoirs in Canada and Venezuela since the 1980s. Depending on the oil viscosity and the solution gas/oil ratio (GOR) at reservoir conditions, some heavy oils have enough mobility to be producible without any heating to reduce oil viscosity. Depending on the degree of sand consolidation, oil and sand may flow together toward the producer, thereby improving the mobility of the oil. The improvements in the design and operation of progressing cavity pumps (PCPs) have allowed sand to be pumped more easily. The produced oil is often observed to be foamy as a result of the slow growth of long-lived gas bubbles in the oil.
