Nonhomogeneous multiphase flow is a common occurrence in vertical and deviated producing wells. It is crucial for well design and optimal operation and production to predict the flow behavior of produced oil and gas, including flow pattern, liquid holdup, and pressure gradient. In this chapter, we present a simple approach for nonhomogeneous, cocurrent, upward vertical, and deviated two-phase flow. Starting from a conceptual description of flow pattern, we next present liquid holdup prediction using both an empirical correlation and simplified mechanistic modeling. Finally, there is pressure gradient prediction based on the predicted flow pattern and liquid holdup, which we present using both empirical correlation and mechanistic modeling approaches. Working examples are presented to illustrate the solution procedures.
